A Step-by-Step Guide: How to Ride an ATV for the Absolute Beginner

Ever looked at photos of people having a blast on an ATV in Bali and thought, “That looks like so much fun… but I’d have no idea what I’m doing”?

If that’s you, you’ve come to the right place.

First up, let’s get one thing straight: you are exactly the kind of person we welcome every single day. Most of our guests are first-timers! The second thing you should know is that riding an ATV is way easier than you think. If you can ride a bicycle, you can definitely ride one of our quad bikes.

So, let’s run you through it. Consider this your 5-minute lesson that will turn you from a total novice into a confident rider.

Meet Your Ride: The Super-Simple Automatic ATV

The main reason it’s so easy is that our ATVs are fully automatic. There are no complicated gears to worry about and no clutch to master. It’s all done for you. You only need to focus on a few simple controls, which are all at your fingertips.

Your First Riding Lesson: A Step-by-Step Guide

During your safety briefing, our guides will walk you through all of this in person, but here’s a sneak peek.

Step 1: Get Comfy

First, our guide will show you how to get seated correctly. You’ll sit comfortably in the middle of the seat with your feet placed firmly on the footrests on either side. Get a feel for the handlebars—not too close, not too far.

Step 2: The GO Button (Your Right Thumb)

On the right handlebar, there’s a small lever. This is the throttle.

How it works: You gently push it forward with your thumb to make the ATV go.
The key: Be gentle! A little push gives you a little power. A bigger push gives you more. To slow down, you simply ease off the throttle. Easy as that.

Step 3: The STOP Levers (Your Hands)

Just like a bicycle, the brakes are on the handlebars. You have a brake lever for the front wheels and another for the rear.

How it works: To slow down or stop, you gently squeeze the brake levers.
The key: Use them smoothly. Your guide will tell you which brake is best to use in different situations.

Step 4: Steering (Look Where You Want to Go)

To steer, you simply turn the handlebars left or right. The most important rule of steering anything—a car, a bike, or an ATV—is to look where you want to go. Your body and hands will naturally follow your eyes. So, don’t stare at the tree you want to avoid; look down the path where you want to be.

Step 5: The Practice Lap

Here’s the best part: we don’t just throw you into the jungle! After your briefing, you’ll take a practice lap in a safe, open area. This is your chance to get a feel for the throttle, test the brakes, and make a few turns. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you get the hang of it. Our guides won’t start the tour until everyone feels comfortable and ready.

You’ve Got This!

And that’s it. That’s honestly all there is to it. Millions of people, many of whom were just as nervous as you might be, have done this and had the time of their lives.

You’re not just booking an adventure; you’re booking an experience you are fully capable of enjoying safely. So, what are you waiting for?
